PSM Gap Assessment

Often, the most challenging part of PSM is attempting to interpret and convert the PSM element requirements into practices that are unique to a business. It is not uncommon to see an organization interpreting PSM elements differently than some other organization. Some companies tend to interpret the regulation in a minimalistic manner or as one can say limited to “compliance”. The important point to understand is that by taking a minimalistic approach to PSM, companies are also minimizing the benefits that their facilities could receive otherwise.

A gap analysis is the first step in understanding the level at which a facility is when it comes to process safety. Sigma-HSE carries out the gap analysis to achieve the following:

  • Benchmark existing process safety standard of a facility
  • Identify potential areas for improvement
  • Suggest appropriate steps for achieving better safety standards

Our gap analysis is based on CCPS Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety and OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119)

The gaps in the facility will be based on the following four Key 'Accident Prevention Pillars'

  • Commitment to Process Safety
  • Understand Hazards and Risks
  • Manage Risk effectively
  • Learn from Experience
