The gas well is continuously burning since June 9. Local residents resorted to blockade and protest alleging the expert team's failure to douse the fire even on the 56th day on Wednesday. Serious flood situation also halted the operation to douse the fire. The protests have also seriously disrupted exploration in 12 oil wells and five gas wells under OIL's Baghjan oilfileds. Social distancing or concern for a coronavirus outbreak was not on any mind. One of the two tanks at the multinational company LG Polymers Plant malfunctioned when the factory was getting ready for reopening. A preliminary report by the Factories Department indicated the leak was caused by a technical glitch in the refrigeration unit attached to the two styrene tanks. The leak was noticed by the company staff member who was reportedly inspecting machines to restart the factory and raised an alarm. As much as 1,800 tonnes of styrene is said to have been in the storage tank when the leakage happened. By 2.30 AM, the gas had enveloped the nearby village, causing a mass scale health crisis. By 9.30 AM when the thick fog caused by the gas lifted, the number of sick had escalated steeply.

The incident occurred at Shakti Paper Mill in Tetla village, where the victims were cleaning an open tank on Wednesday evening, Raigarh superintendent of police Santosh Singh said. However, the factory owner did not inform the administration about the incident, which only came to light after the hospital authorities alerted the police, he said. The mill had remained shut ever since the Covid-19 lockdown was enforced and the cleaning work was underway to resume operations, the official said. The workers were admitted to a local hospital, from where three were shifted to Raipur in view of their critical condition, he said. A team of forensic experts was dispatched to the spot to investigate the exact cause of the incident, Singh said, adding that a case will be registered soon.

An explosion at a fireworks factory killed eight people and injured nine others on March 20. The incident occurred near Sattur in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
